Maytag Washers: Built Tougher, But Not Invincible
Maytag positions their washers as the most durable option in the Whirlpool family, and they back it with a longer parts warranty on key components. The Maytag Commercial Technology washers use a heavier-duty motor, stainless steel wash basket, and industrial-grade suspension components. These machines genuinely handle larger loads and more frequent use than their Whirlpool-branded counterparts.
But durability doesn't mean immortality. The electronic controls still fail. The drain pump still clogs. The bearings still wear, though they take longer to do it. When a Maytag washer finally needs attention, it deserves a technician who understands what makes these machines different from the standard Whirlpool platform underneath them.
A Maytag Bravos That Kept Filling with Water
A homeowner in St. Louis Park called because her Maytag Bravos would not stop filling with water. She'd start a load and the water would keep rising past the normal level, eventually overflowing. She was manually turning it off to prevent flooding.
On the Bravos platform, water level is controlled by a pressure switch connected to an air tube that runs down to the tub. As water rises, air pressure in the tube increases, and the pressure switch tells the control board to close the inlet valve. If the air tube has a hole, a kink, or has popped off its fitting, the switch never feels the pressure and the valve stays open.
I found the air tube had slipped off the bottom fitting where it connects to the tub. Thirty seconds to reattach it, and the washer filled perfectly. No parts needed, just knowledge of where to look. The diagnostic fee was the entire cost.
Common Maytag Washer Problems
Bravos Shift Actuator Failure
The Bravos uses a shift actuator to switch between agitation and spin modes. When it fails, the washer either won't agitate or won't spin, and may throw an F7E1 error code. The actuator is mounted at the bottom of the machine and takes about 45 minutes to replace.
Lid Lock Mechanism Issues
The Bravos lid lock must engage and report back to the control board before any cycle phase begins. If the lock motor fails or the position sensor malfunctions, the washer sits idle. I test the lock assembly and its wiring before replacing.
Drain Pump Clogs
The Maytag drain pump handles the heavy loads this machine is designed for, but it can still get clogged by small items — coins, buttons, fabric debris. I clear the pump and inspect the impeller for damage.
Classic Maytag Transmission Oil Leak
Pre-2006 Maytag washers used a gear-driven transmission that develops oil leaks as the seals age. You'll see dark oil under the machine. The transmission can be rebuilt, but on a machine this old, I'll help you weigh repair versus replacement honestly.
Maytag Washer Parts I Keep Ready
Shift actuators, lid lock assemblies, drain pumps, water inlet valves, and suspension rod kits for the Bravos platform. For the older Maytag machines, I carry drive belts, couplers, and lid switches. The commercial-grade components in Maytag washers are specific to the Maytag part number, and I stock accordingly.
Maytag's Extra Warranty Might Cover You
Maytag offers a 10-year limited parts warranty on the wash basket and drive motor of many of their washers. If your machine is within that window, the part itself may be covered even if labor isn't. I'll check your model's warranty status and let you know if the manufacturer is on the hook for the component before you pay for it.
